A Snowy Minnesota Engagement Session

I know, I know, it’s May and I am blogging about a snowy engagement session. But in my defense this session was to good not to share. Tiffany and Seth had their engagement session done at the end of March, and in Minnesota is can either be warm and sunny or cold and cloudy. But Tiffany and Seth lucked out and had a warm snowy sunny day. They could not have had more perfect weather for their Minnesota engagement session. For this session we met at a place neither of us had ever been before and it was so pretty there. Tiffany and Seth’s engagement session took place at Lake Carlos State Park in Alexandria, Minnesota. I had lots of fun wandering around before their session to find the perfect location. And although we faced the very Minnesotan problem on waist deep snow, I could not be more happy with how their images turned out.

It funny really, I start every engagement session by asking a few fairly basic questions, such as “how did you two meet, what’s your story?” Now recently most of my wedding/engagement couples meet online, which in this day and age that’s so normal, even Mitchell and I met online. But when Tiffany and Seth said that they met in person, at a hair salon where Tiffany cut’s hair. I was so surprised, I was expecting the usual response, of a slight giggle and a “we actually met online.” So it was really nice to see people still me outside of the internet. But maybe it’s just me that finds that fascinating.

Now, I’ll be honest, I do not book very many outdoor engagement sessions in Minnesota during the winter months. So location scouting in snow was a bit of a challenge for me. I also like move around from location to location during sessions, which I’ll admit gives my introverted brain a second to refocus and think of more poses. So when all of the spots look the same, what the heck do you do. This was something I admittedly struggled with during this session. As I continue to learn and grow as a wedding photographer, situations like this offer me the most lessons. During this session I learned a lot about posing variation, and even though they are in the same spot each image is capable of looking very different from angles, poses, and crops. Given the challenge I am very happy with how Tiffany and Seth’s images turned out. During editing I even made the time to play around with creating some double exposures and gif’s. A goal I set for myself this year to be more creative during sessions and editing, so that was really fun to play around with. Minnesota is truly beautiful in all season’s if you look for it and I cannot wait to book more Minnesota winter sessions.

Anyways, thank you if you have made it this far after my little ramble, here are the images I know you came here to see :)
