Why You Need a Second Shooter

Let’s start out by talking about what even is a “second shooter,” a second shooter is a second photographer that is hired by your photographer to help them document your wedding day. They are great for many reasons like being a second pair of observing eyes to capture the little moments, and an extra set of hands to help when needed. I think one thing that I regret about my own wedding was not spending the little extra money to have a second photographer at my wedding day. There are so many little moments I wish were captured that just having one photographer wasn’t able to handle. It’s a little thing that makes a big difference. Wedding’s are huge events and very busy and FULL days for everyone involved. When I became a Minnesota wedding photographer I knew that I always wanted to have a second shooter with me on wedding days. Having that second person has been so crucial in my business and serving my clients, so in today’s blog post I want to go through all of the benefits of having a second shooter.

Pros and Cons of Second Shooters at Weddings

Pros

  • More coverage: Having two photographers means more moments can be captured simultaneously. This is especially useful during key events like the ceremony or reception where multiple things are happening at once. One photographer can focus on the couple and the other can capture reactions and candid moments.

  • Different perspectives: With two photographers comes two unique styles and perspectives. This adds variety to the final product and gives clients a wider range of images to choose from.

  • Backup: In case of equipment failure or unforeseen circumstances, having a second shooter ensures that the day can still be documented. This added security can help put clients at ease.

  • Assistance: A second photographer can help with lighting, posing, and other technical aspects of the shoot. This can be particularly helpful when working with large groups or in challenging lighting conditions.

Cons

  • Cost: Hiring a second photographer can be expensive and may not fit in every couple's budget. This added expense may not be worthwhile for smaller, more intimate weddings. However I eliminate this con by offering second shooters in all of my all-inclusive wedding packages. So if you want to have a second shooter, consider one of my inclusive packages. • Coordination: Two photographers can mean more coordination and communication is needed to ensure that everyone is on the same page. This may be more challenging with a second photographer, however all of the second shooters I work with are close friends and have been trained to work with you and not against you.

In the end, having a second shooter is up to you, but definitely keep it in mind when booking your wedding photographer and at least consider the option of having one. I have had my second shooter save the day on more than on occurrence and in my opinion they are 100% worth having at your wedding day.

Plus (photographers) your second shooter will capture some gems for you of yourself at some point during the day. Here is me towards the end of a reception, I was very tired at this point.
