Glendalough State Park Winter Engagement Session

The first few sessions of the 2025 photography season are getting started and I am so excited. My first outdoor session of the year was at Glendalough State Park in Battle Lake Minnesota. And with sub zero temperatures I am so excited with how these turned out. And very thankful that this couple was down to brave the cold for an epic engagement session.

Hope and Collin reached out and did their first online meeting with me from a fish house. I knew immediately that we would be a great fit. They are so laid back and so full of love it was great getting to know them in the little bit of time during their winter engagement session.

It’s not to often that I get to photograph a winter engagement session so I had to review some of my quick tips:

  1. Wear layers when you can. I know you picked the perfect outfit for your session, and I don’t want to ruin that by making you year layers. But if you can hide those layers. DO IT! It will allow just that much more time outside during our cold Minnesota winters.

  2. Hot hands… yes! those little pouches that get really hot and can sit in your pocket, shoes, or in your hands. They are so easy to hide when holding hands with your partner, and they just give that little boost of heat.

  3. Take jacket/blanket/car breaks. For Hope and Collin we just did a quick session as they plan to also do a summer engagement session (p.s did you know that I allow split engagement sessions with the complimentary session included in wedding packages) But even during the 15 minutes we were shooting we took quick jacket breaks

  4. Snuggle into your partner as much as you can. Just like a penguin colony, use the body heat of your partner to help you hold out just a little longer

  5. Go with the flow and have fun. It takes very brave souls to take winter engagement photos (especially when it was 9 degrees like it was for Hope and Collin) but have fun and show off those northern roots.
